WAN (Wide area network, namely the Internet) has become the new LAN (Local Area Network, which was traditionally the office network). High availability, flexibility, and pay as you go pricing of the cloud offers huge dependability and value especially for small and medium sized businesses. All of this has certainly changed the way people work, but what does that mean for the managed service provider i.e the services company providing IT Support / server support / network management to the enterprise?

Cloud computing will definitely see many small and medium scale businesses move to public clouds (i.e the Internet), while the larger enterprises build their own private clouds (consolidation via virtualization etc at their own data centers, co-lo facilities etc). I think this is just a no-brainer, with the question being around how quick the adoption will happen going forward.

The role of the service provider – MSP (Manged Service Provider) or SI (System Integrator) evolved from provider of infrastructure (traditional VAR) to managed services (MSP). The opportunity now lies in helping businesses move from on-premise to selecting appropriate cloud platforms, migrating to these platforms and most importantly integration.

The last piece – i.e Integration is going to be a very critical area given that most cloud services are application specific and hence businesses need to ensure that different line-of-business applications talk to one another securely, even while each one may be hosted separately. This is where the service provider can play an important role along with the more commodotized set of service offerings like monitoring, maintenance etc.
